Bill is a Board Certified Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and has been since 1986. He is Board Certified in Minnesota as a Civil Trial Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association and has been since the inception of the specialist designation in Minnesota. Bill was recognized as a leading attorney in Minnesota by the American Research Corporation (ARC) and was so recognized in the first list by ARC for Minnesota Lawyers. Bill has been named a Minnesota Super Lawyer since the beginning of the Super Lawyer designation and has been so recognized every year Minnesota Super lawyer lists have been published.

Bill is actively involved in the Minnesota Association for Justice, a group dedicated to the legal rights of individual, and he served as President of the Association in 1998-99. Bill was recognized by the Minnesota Association for Justice with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. Bill is also a founding member of the Amdahl Inn of Court, a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and a member of the American Academy of Certified Trial Lawyers, and an invited member of the International Society of Barristers. He is also a sustaining member of the American Association for Justice. Bill has published numerous articles and conducts frequent lectures to other lawyers in the areas of personal injury, product liability, professional malpractice, and wrongful death.
